How to Build a Better Internet

Internet speeds in America, the country that invented the Internet average 12 Mbps, good for 12th in the world and just below Romania. The infrastructure is capable of 300 Mbps, but cable companies usually have no competition in local markets to drive down cost and drive up service quality (bandwidth and availability). One optimistic option to solving this problem involves enlisting cities to build a patchwork of new or improved infrastructure, but a more realistic option would be a hybrid model of cities working closely with internet carriers to guarantee better service to everyone in the area.
