Tokusatsu 特撮 Google Doodle

Google Doodle for July 7th

Today’s Google Doodle highlights a live action genre, known as “Tokusatsu” (特撮) in Japanese, which is still evident in many modern beast-based thrillers such as Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim (2013), Hideaki Anno’s Evangelion (1995-1996), Shotaro Ishinomori’s Gorengers (1970s), and Haim Saban’s Power Rangers (1990s+). The interactive Google Doodle spotlights one of Tokusatsu’s kings, Eiji Tsuburaya, the quiet pioneer who created Ultraman, co-created Godzilla, and brought Tokusatsu to the global cinematic mainstream. Today is Tsuburaya’s 114th birthday anniversary.
