2013 in Review

Time is not measured by the flipping of digits on a smartphone display. Time is a continuum of interrelated events comprised of our decisions, behaviors, relationships with others, and, perhaps luck and/or divine intervention.

The Kilar family is going on year two in the City of Angels. Last year was a tough transition for us from San Antonio, Texas, but we have established social circles here in L.A. while maintaining friendships from our home of six years in Texas. Here are some of the highlights of 2013 that are highlighted in our annual video summary:

  • January 1: New Year’s Eve by the fire

  • February 8-10: Rocklin ATA Tournament. Northern California is in severe need of experienced taekwondo instructors. We had fun any way, but mainly the fun was related to driving in snow, eating at Johnny Garlic’s, and driving 430 miles of the Pacific Coast Highway.
  • February 22: Compete Nationals NASKA Tournament, Ontario, CA. Rissa and JR competed in their first open circuit karate tournament, instead of their usual closed circuit taekwondo tournaments.
    • JR Kilar earns 4th place in his first NASKA tournament

    • Rissa Kilar earns 5th place in her first NASKA tournament

  • March 2: I had the pleasure of meeting Dominic Cumo, a 10-year old kid with Lou Gehrig’s disease, and watch him test for a new taekwondo belt at Allen Moser’s Integrity Martial Arts of Apple Valley, CA.
  • March 5: Extreme Martial Arts (XMA) Headquarters of North Hollywood, CA officially becomes an ATA school under Victory Martial Arts. The kids have been part of ATA since 2001, but they have been under (Chief) Master Von Schmeling’s Victory Martial Arts since 2006.
