Pearl Harbor…one generation’s 9/11

September 11th, 2001. December 7th, 1941. Nearly 60 years separate those two dates, yet the lesson is still the same. Historically, America likes to dismantle its military might in order to save its budget for “other things”. Time and time again, we are reminded of those cheesy cliches that ring true–freedom is not free, lest we forget, et cetera. In 1941 we as a nation had just emerged from the Great Depression and had sent a handful of soldiers to fight in the Great War, the War to End All Wars. The disputes were happening so far away that it could not affect America. Lo and behold, Pearl Harbor happened. Some say “we let it happen so we could get involved in the war”. I am not here to blog about conspiracy theories. It happened. People died. We as a nation were not prepared for it. We did not learn our lesson, for 60 years later it happened again–we were attacked unawares. Some say “we let it happen so we could get involved in the war”. Again, I am not here to blog about silly conspiracy theories or bash President Bush. It happened. People died. Again, we were not prepared for it. When will the next Pearl Harbor or 9/11 happen? Well, let us dismantle our military once again and find out. Freedom is not free. It is paid for with the blood of its citizens. In modern times, those citizens may not even be in uniform, as was the case in 2001. Thomas Jefferson said, “From time to time, the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots.”
